Girlfit June News

June 1…….. Winter is here and it brings with it the beginning of our Winter Buddy Challenge. Over 60 women have joined and are ready to transform and stay healthy in the next 12 weeks. We are sending positive energy to all who are participating and we wish them all the best. Remember it takes commitment, sacrifice and damn hard work to transform your body but if you really want it you will succeed.
Winter can put a chill in your intentions to get out and exercise. Who wants to go outside when the temperature drops? Even those of us with the best intentions can turn into slug mode …….. as your warm bed convinces you to stay or your partner wants that extra cuddle! But exercising early in the mornings in the cold weather can provide you with numerous benefits and all it takes is a little motivation to get outside. Organise your gear the night before and spring out of bed when that alarm goes off.

Benefits to exercising in the cold Winter months
1. Exercise can help to boost endorphins and elevate your mood. Many people suffer from mood changes during the winter months.
2. The cool Winter air feels amazing on your skin. You will feel invigorated and alive after your early morning workout.
3. Exercising throughout Winter will put you ahead of the game when Spring comes … whether your goal is to look good in a bathing suit and shorts or to improve your time in your local 6km race.

Cold weather exercise tips
1. When exercising outdoors, it’s important to dress properly. Wear layers that you can peel off as necessary. Ideally, the layer closest to your skin should be made of a breathable wicking material and not sweat-absorbing cotton. Then add a layer of fleece or cotton for warmth and, finally, a windbreaker or waterproof outer layer. Girlfit jackets are perfect to layer.
2. Make sure you have adequately insulated your extremities. The face, fingers and toes are most likely to get cold.
3. Don’t forget your Girlfit Beanie. Substantial body heat is lost through your head.
4. Though you may feel less thirsty in cold weather, continue to drink water while exercising. Dehydration can be a common problem when exercising in cold weather.

Coffs Evening Classes
Due to the lack of light the Coffs Evening classes will be not run on our Winter timetable. Spring will see these two classes back on again. The last Coffs evening class is this Thursday the 2nd of June. Sawtell has three afternoon classes commencing at 5pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. We train for ½ outside and then move inside for the second half of the session when darkness arrives. With the multi pass you can now come out to Sawtell in the evenings.

When: Saturday 3rd September
Hold the date and organise a group of friends for the evening. The band is booked and we will be fundraising for Breast Cancer Research on the night. If you have a business and would like to donate something for a silent auction please let me know.

Skin Dryness….Beat the Winter Skin Blues!!
As winter sets in and the weather turns colder, windier and drier, your skin will need some extra help and protection from the environment. Sometimes, the weather may change rapidly and you need to be prepared otherwise the skin that is exposed to the elements, such as your hands, your face and your lips will begin to become dry, chapped and crusty.

First and foremost, your best defence for winter skin care is protection! Even during the winter months, you absolutely need to continue to apply SPF 15 or greater sunscreenevery morning, especially when spending time outside. You might think the sun's effects are diminished during the winter months, nothing could be farther from the truth.

Although it may seem contradictory, winter facial care for dry skin also benefits tremendously from exfoliation to help eliminate the flaking skin cells to smooth the skin's surface and promote cell rejuvenation.

Whether you choose to use a chemical exfoliant such as an AHA product like glycolic acidor a mechanical means such as a microdermabrasion treatment or facial scrub; incorporating a means of exfoliation into your routine at least a few times a week can dramatically improve dry skin. A weekly facial peel is also beneficial for overexposed, dry skin. I highly recommend a course of 6 peels weekly/fortnightly apart. The year is well and truly underway, wow May has arrived!!

With May welcomes a cooler change along the Coast. Shorter days and fresh mornings! If you have lost your way already this year (perhaps some of those New Year’s resolutions have already failed- make sure you stay tuned for our challenge commencing in June! Girlfit is now a very different business from when I used to train a handful of girls at Sawtell myself & our expenses are now outstripping our income. Since we began back in 2009 we have brought on extra staff, expanded our sessions to cover the whole Coffs Coast, purchased new equipment, we sponsor local community events, had council fees imposed upon us and much more. To assist those of you who haven’t discovered the convenience of paying via direct debit yet, we have decided that loyalty cards will still be available for everyone and the current offer of buy 5 get 1 free will still apply (dropping the price to $12.50 p/session).

Girlfit Retreat
Wow, what a weekend! My feet have literally just landed back on the ground.
A big thank-you to all who supported the weekend. The speakers were full of informative information that I know you have taken to help with your journey through life. From Pelvic Floor to Self Defence, from Nutrition to Defeating Depression and from Loving Myself for who I am to giving yourself a facial!
Darlington Park was a beautiful location. The weather gods behaved and even though we didn’t get to surf, we got to laugh! Learn to Surf will be on again in October at our next Retreat.
The food was delicious, the company was girly and it’s a weekend you really should not miss. Next Girlfit Retreat is on the weekend of October 29th/30th.
PMS…….AHHHHH (Secret Women’s Business)

IS PMS sabotaging you every month? When your monthly friend is in town here’s some info for you to read:

Did you know, on average women increase their kilojoule intake by up to 20 per cent in the days leading up to their period? It has been proven that women with PMS crave fatty and sugary foods to stimulate the happy hormone and pleasure chemicals. To avoid over indulging, eat small frequent meals to reduce bloating and manage blood sugar levels. If you must indulge in dark chocolate for its antioxidant and mood boosting properties.
Exercise ……mmm sometimes NO FUN!!!
Exercising during your period is actually more difficult. At the beginning of your cycle, both oestrogen and progesterone are low, so you’ll find it hard to get motivated to exercise. However it’s worth the effort, exercise can lessen cramping, bloating and improve your mood. And you know what….at Girlfit we are all women experiencing the same issues!!
SKINNY JEANS…..Don’t Fit
Yes, there is the theory that you put on a couple of kilo’s around your period. The body retains fluid and sodium and your progesterone and blood sugar levels fall in the lead up to your period. Solution? Eat regularly and drink plenty of water. Oh and please, please ban the SCALES around period time!
FEELING Unattractive around PERIOD Time?
It your period making you feel like that. Have a hot bath and something special like have a facial. Or simply keep motivated by your beautiful friends at Girlfit…..breakfast on a Saturday to catch up with the Girlfit crew!

Wet weather location is now at the Sea Rescue right where you ladies train. You ladies have done it tough up there with that tiny shelter so a big thank you to the Sea Rescue for letting us use their headquarters. We are still looking for a Coffs Wet Weather location. Any ideas please let me know.

Autumn ………….where did our Summer go?
Girlfit has had a busy start to the year with the successful Inaugural Gladiator event. A fun day was had by all and Sawtell Town were victors by the smallest margins. Congratulations to Jenny Dowd and Tracey Cooper who tied in the Individual Gladiator event. Afternoon Childminding at Sawtell
Girlfit is now offering child-minding at Sawtell on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon sessions.
The cost of child-minding is $2.00 per child. The child will be looked after whilst playing in the park and the afternoon session will stay in the Park so the mums can still see their children playing. Jess Cowan will be looking after the children. We will trial this for 6 weeks.
