RUNNING UP HILL with Lizzie and Justina Week 3: The sun comes out to play for training Week 3: The sun comes out to play for training
MISSION: To complete the 12-week Girlfit Challenge
STATUS: Week 3 complete
------------
L IZZIE said: I survived another mammoth training week, despite the weather being just a little inclement for training – all in all, I think we had around 10 inches of rain. I just about had to row a boat down to training at the Fishing Club, but guess what? I didn’t miss a day!
Beth, Emma and Doris, alias the dynamic BED team, didn’t miss any sessions either. I thought given the weather was so bad they may have cut us a little slack, or may not have been able to get through the floods. Wrong! They were there with bells on.
Apparently there are so many wonderful exercises you can still do under cover to get that little heart pumping, even if it’s blowing 100-mile-an-hour winds and the rain is horizontal.
All the little routines we do are getting a little easier though. I’m sure if I looked in the mirror I wouldn’t be quite as blue during a session as I was in the first week.
Blue you ask... you guessed it – from lack of oxygen. I think as we go along I’m actually managing to get little gasps of air into my lungs as I’m running, skipping and jumping through all the hoops. Ha ha!
But one things for sure, not only are we getting a little fitter, but so are our trainers so the pace is getting faster and harder.
One of my highlights this week was on Friday where the weather was fine and we got to do a wonderful challenge. This involved splitting up with our buddies, I’m guessing we were 100 metres apart, out in the carpark looking over the beautiful waves rolling in.
Justina had the gloves on and me the pads, and this is how it went: Justina up one end doing 20 push-ups, 20 mountain climbs and 20 squats, then she’d sprint up to me and start boxing. No, I wasn’t the lucky one having a rest while I waited – I was doing push-ups, star jumps, and squats with the other pad holders! And the best part of all is we got to reverse roles and I got to run it out as well.
My final excitement for this week was to have a weigh in, which to my surprise was a great result. My philosophy in life is: Work hard, play hard, and now... work damn hard on getting me fit!

JUSTINA said: Oh... my.... goodness! I thought we’d already had the hardest workouts possible, but nobody told me that Nic was busy developing new routines to keep challenging us, like the one we were met with on Friday!
Based on a large circuit with plenty of running, and bringing back those little blue discs I know Liz loves so much, Beth led us through a few lapse (I swear they are training us for a marathon) before the boxing finale. By the last 10 minutes I wanted to crawl up that hill and curl up on a sunny rock!
And I must admit, the rest of the day was a little difficult to get through without a ‘nanna nap’. If only it wasn’t newspaper deadline day for me, I could have possibly snuck in a quick shut eye without anyone noticing... (Mental note: try that on a quieter day in the office!)
Friday’s session had our little hearts pumping away again as Doris and Emma led the 30 or so Coffs Girlfitters through their strides. But it was such a beautiful morning and making our way through the workout atop of Gallows Beach with the sun rising, again I couldn’t complain too much. I never thought I’d say it... but I am loving being up to see these early, fresh, beautiful mornings (weather permitting).
After two-and-a-half weeks of working out every week day at 6am, when the weekend hit I was feeling on top of the world. So much in fact that I thought ‘I don’t need two rest days I’ll do a workout of my own’...
After a slammin’ one-hour cardio/boxing workout, I was feeling buggered but great and then my body started to cool down, and that’s when tragedy struck... okay a little exaggeration – but if you’re a sufferer of back pain, you may agree with me.
I’m one of the unlucky ones who suffers with back pain... gotta love that prolapsed disc (NOT!) so for me every session requires that much more concentration to focus on not doing any moves that will jolt my back or cause the damaged disc to “slip”. I know that it will get easier and be second nature as my core strengthens, but until then, it’s baby steps... and ones I hope my Coffs trainers will be patient with (be gentle ladies).
Unfortunately (due to my dodgy back) I had to miss two sessions at the beginning of the week, but I’m very proud that my challenge buddy Lizzie still got herself up for the morning workout. Go you good thing!
But I’m back on the proverbial horse and a word of warning to my fellow back pain sufferers – take things slow, warm up well before exercising, be conscious of big movements and take that extra five minutes to extend the cool down stretch after your workout... I know I am.

“RUNNING UP HILL with Lizzie and Justina
Week 2: Challenge met with determination
MISSION: To complete the 12-week Girlfit Challenge
STATUS: Week 2 complete
-------------
LIZZIE SAID: Hello again from Team Independent! I thought you may be wondering if I was still alive... well the answer is amazingly YES!
Training is never complete without 'Team BE' - that's short for my trainers Beth and Emma - and let me tell you we also have another trainer Doris, and after she is finished with us you can add 'D' to Team BE and that's equal to BED, which is what I am praying for once I've finished a training session with the dynamic BED team.
Fortunately the weather was (mostly) a little kinder to us than last week, and our BED trainers took advantage to get us out running up hill and down dale.
I was delighted at one of our mornings trainings when the BED team decided we should play tunnel ball. I thought that sounds like fun, well from my memories as a kid at school it was a pretty light form of exercise. Wrong!
We were all in teams and we not only had to run from one end of the carpark to the other, but we had to run attached to the rest of our team. I'm sure anyone watching would have thought it could have ended up on Funniest Home Videos.
Another one of my highlights for the week was the chance to 'play' on the circuit. It looked like pretty good fun, all these little blue pads placed on the grass around an extremely large circuit looking over the harbour. What a beautiful way to start the morning, right? Wrong again!
Each of the little suckers had a picture on it, like push-ups or squats and we had to do about 20 seconds at each pad before running two laps and moving on to the next exercise disc.
My final excitement for the week was a boxing session with my challenge buddy Justina. We started and Justina had the gloves on and I had the mitts. The instruction was called and boxers had to run up the hill after punching the crap out of the mitts 50 times or more.
Yes! I get to have a break while Jus runs her little heart out... You guessed it – Wrong! If you weren't boxing and running you were doing push-ups, squats and running down and up the Fishing Club hill!
One thing is for sure... week one was pretty damn daunting but I can assure you in week two there was a little ray of hope starting to creep in... I made it to the lift and all the way to my desk!
------------------
JUS TINA SAID: By the first day of our second week I was feeling AWESOME!
Although my muscles still have the ache from a great workout, I don't feel like I'm The Hulk on a bad day.
But don't worry, I'm not trying to fool anybody, especially myself - yes week two is over, but no it doesn't get any easier.
Running drills still kill me, even with the amazing views over Gallows Beach. With every stride and every measured breath echoing in my head, I'm not exactly stealthing my way through the pack just yet.
Friday's boxing circuit was THE hardest session I've experienced so far. Beth and Doris split us into two groups where we did various stations with running, push-ups, sit-ups, more running, squats and lunges, more running, we boxed, we blocked, and we did hill runs!
But there's no giving up! Instead of bowing out in that last repetition Liz and I are getting that last little oomph to push harder and faster, and the calories burnt off only prove it!
The Queen's Birthday long weekend was a hurdle in itself - falling out of the routine (even for a couple of days) topped with the freezing cold, torrential rain we're having, made it very hard to get back into the right frame of mind. Thank goodness I'm starting at this time of year though because I really don't know if I could have conquered a Christmas break instead this early into a new routine!
The plan was for Liz and I to go to the special Monday afternoon workout at Sawtell to stay on track, but there's no rest for the wicked, and both of us spent the day in the office working instead.
By Monday night I thought carefully about why I'm doing this and pictured myself at the end of the 12 weeks (va va voom!), and just like that I was ready and rearing to go again Tuesday morning... I am woman hear me roar!
